| | I have been trying to push through to the next level in Polish. I recently took a two week intensive course -it showed me that I still have a lot to learn. Then today a colleague of ours in Italy sent me this link, I see that Irish people have troubles with Polish as well. This article is great and proves that Polish is a tough language no matter what country you live in.
I met a couple of nice Polish Police officers again the other night. I was late getting home from a student meeting and everything was going well as I got close to home. I had two green lights in a row that allowed me to merge through four lanes (from far right to far left) in about 1/4 of a mile. At the second light which was still green, I flipped a U and went through the gas station to catch the street that goes down to our apartment. This little maneuver saves at least a km and two more stop lights. It was as I past the station and ready to turn down our street that I noticed a police car behind me. I even thought to myself, I hope he's not following me for some reason. Sure enough, as I turned down the street that goes to our apartment, he turned on his lights. I hate it when that happens! I immediately pulled over, got out my papers and International Driver's License and he asked me if I knew it was illegal to make a U turn at the light. I did not know it. I have done it often and seen many others do it too. That does not change the fact that it is not legal. I told him I did not know it was illegal. He then came back and told me it would be 500 PLN (about $150) and 6 points on my record! I said, "There was no sign not to allow U turns." He said, "It is only legal when there is a U turn sign." Now I know. When he told me the second time how much it was going to cost, he said, "300 PLN and 5 points." So I said, "f I broke the law, I have to pay." I started to dig to see what kind of money I had as I asked if I paid him or at the station. He said, "Do you live in that apartment?" I said "Yes". He said, "Go home."
I think I know the meaning of grace mixed with mercy. I am thankful my Polish was not as good as I wanted it to be that night.
